Quality Control Lab Manager

Location: San Luis Obispo, CA

Reporting to: Director of Operations

Job Description Summary:
Manage a standardized seed testing laboratory for a vegetable seed company. Provide timely, accurate preparation, evaluation, and recording of seed analysis in accordance to standardized testing procedures, as recognized by the International Seed Testing Association (ISTA), the Association of Official Seed Analysts (AOSA) and the Canadian Methods and Procedures, and to provide the needed solutions to fulfill customer orders with the quality information needed.

Major Accountabilities:

  • Ensure and maintain compliance with industry standards; ensure testing methods and protocols are up to date according to the Federal Seed Act, the International Seed Testing Association (ISTA), the Canadian Methods and Procedures (M & P), and the Association of Official Seed Analysts (AOSA)
  • Responsible for the testing of vegetable seed for germination, vigor and physical purity

Technical Salesperson

Location: Chile

Reporting to: Central/South America Sales

Job Description Summary:
Based out of Chile, the Technical Salesperson will be responsible for the Product Development and Sales for Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru, with potential to assist other South American countries. Strengthening the relationship with current distributors and creating new business.

Quality Assurance Manager

Job Description Summary:
Provide the leadership and management of a new and growing quality organization within VoloAgri. This position would be fully accountable for all QC activities for physiological, genetic purity and seed health testing programs. The position will oversee the development of a Quality Management System that would include process mapping/documentation, non-conformities and process improvements as well as handling of customer complaints. The role would provide technical expertise and advice in all aspects of seed and process quality and will drive the organization to be a “World Class Supplier of High Quality Seeds”. Focus will be the Americas but will later lead development of quality programs in new global expanding regions.

Major Accountabilities:

  • Responsible for germination, vigor and physical purity testing both with internal and external labs.
  • Ensure and maintain compliance with industry standards; ensure testing methods and protocols are up to date according to the Federal Seed Act, the International Seed Testing Association (ISTA), the Canadian Methods and Procedures (M & P), and the Association of Official Seed Analysts (AOSA).
  • Oversee the genetic purity and seed health QC testing programs.
  • Ensure a robust field purity grow-out program that is timely and accurate.
  • Manage the development of a molecular marker testing (SNPs, SSR, etc.) program in collaboration with breeders and our marker lab in the Netherlands.
  • Manage 3rd party seed health labs as to timing and accuracy and develop a plan and infrastructure to bring the seed health testing in house with state of the art conventional and molecular testing.
  • Work with industry technical experts in the enhancement of existing or development of new seed test methods.

  • Develop a risk management process to derogate the sale of substandard product.
  • Implement a robust customer complaint program that properly reports, investigates, concludes with recommendations (valid, invalid, settlement).
  • Provide technical support to the all aspects of the business that related to product, process or service quality. Participate in risk assessment and recommendations on derogations or customer complaints.
  • Work in cooperation with all stakeholders and provide solutions on quality related matters.
  • Take the lead role in the requirements gathering and the designs of VoloAgri QC labs at our future Operations site in Woodland CA.

Job Summary:
In summary, the Office Manager supports the entire Woodland team in the day to day office management tasks of the company, with responsibilities including, but not limited to the following:

Research Assistant – Solanaceae Crops Breeding

Location: Yolo, CA

Reporting to: Tomato and Pepper Breeders

Job Description Summary:
To assist the breeder(s) in all aspects of field, lab and greenhouse cropping, experimentation, crossing, seed multiplication, seed processing and shipment, tissue sampling, record keeping and seed or pollen inventory maintenance in support of the Solanaceae breeding programs. Duties will include oversight/execution of breeding related crossing activities, field trial establishment, harvesting, postharvest fruit testing and associated labor and transportation oversight. Position will provide training and close supervision of key technical and seasonal support staff. An emphasis on safety will be maintained at all times.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • To plan and timely execute all assigned breeding activities related to field, greenhouse, nursery, and lab experiments including experimental design, labeling, mapping and placement. To maintain secure and accurate records for same.
  • In association with breeder(s), plan and execute all crossing related activities in support of the breeding programs. Maintain crossing blocks in optimum condition to maximize pollination efficiency and seed yields. Monitor status of all crossing blocks on a routine basis to assure that all combinations and seed targets are met.
  • To store and maintain seed stocks and related data records in proper order and secure condition at all times. This is to include timely packaging, labeling, organization and filing of seed packets.
  • To evaluate the status of all seeds, pollen, crops and experiments daily including coordination of regular monitoring of related environmental and growing conditions. Insure that strict sanitation and growing SOPs are followed with proactive reporting of problems.
  • Scout all crops on a routine basis to determine health status.
  • To coordinate the preparation and shipment of all seed, pollen, and tissue samples for marker analysis.
  • To regularly check supply inventories and order necessary items on a timely and proactive basis or as directed by the supervisor.
  • To plan for, coordinate and train technical or seasonal labor to assure accurate, safe and high quality work is performed at all times.
  • Assist breeder in all phases of field trial evaluations including selections, harvest, transportation of fruit, grading, sampling, fruit quality testing and related postharvest activities. Generate reports or lists for these activities.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for the direct supervision of seasonal labor for greenhouse, lab and field experiments.

Qualifications and Education:

  • B.S. in Horticulture, Agronomy, Plant Science, Botany or closely related technical field or experiential equivalent in an industry or university setting where seedling and plant production is the main focus.
  • Two or more years of experience in a closely related technical support role and at least two years of hands-on experience in greenhouse/ field operations and/or seedling production is preferred.
  • Able to plan, direct and execute field, nursery and greenhouse operations such as sowing, planting, pruning, harvesting, crossing, seed extractions and pesticide applications. Farm or R&D experience preferred.
  • Training (license preferred) in pesticide applications and related safety.

Research Assistant – Stock Seed Technician (Vegetable Seeds)

Location: Yolo, CA

Reporting to: Production Manager

Job Description Summary:
The Stock Seed Technician will be responsible for seed production of elite stock seed and stock seed from breeder’s foundation seed on the VoloAgri Farm. The position will include coordination, communication and planning with the VoloAgri research staff at the location and various other breeders at other breeding locations of VoloAgri to determine a production plan of stock seed. The Stock Seed Technician will be in close communication with the management of the Yolo farm to accomplish the production objectives.

Essential Functions:

  • Sowing, transplanting, crop monitoring, harvesting, threshing and/or washing and drying stock seed increases
  • Working with net houses, shade houses, greenhouses, drip irrigation, pesticide applications, and any task necessary to produce the stock seed increases
  • Record keeping, software skills including but not limited to Microsoft outlook, office, ERP system ABS, and various other programs
  • Store and maintain seed stocks and related data records in proper order and secure condition at all times. This includes timely packaging, labeling, organizing, and filing of seed packets
  • Evaluate the status of all seeds, pollen, crops and stock seed increases daily including coordination of regular monitoring of related environmental and growing conditions
  • Ensure that strict sanitation and growing SOPs are followed with proactive reporting of problems
  • Scout all crops on a routine basis to determine health status
  • Regularly check supply inventories and order necessary items on a timely and proactive basis or as directed by the supervisor
  • Prepare stock seed and supporting documentation for shipment to growers
  • Communicate with the Production Assistant and Production Manager on a regular basis to inform of progress, status, and planning
  • Work closely with the assistant farm manager and farm manager to accomplish all tasks
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with breeders, research staff, production staff, and field workers

Supervisory Responsibility:

  • Responsible for the direct supervision of seasonal labor for greenhouses, net houses and field stock seed increases
  • Plan for, coordinate, and train technical or seasonal labor to ensure accurate, safe, and high quality work is performed at all times

Work Environment:

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work:

Required Education and Experience:

  • Associate’s degree in agronomy, plant science, biology, or related field
  • Two or more years of experience in a closely related technical support role and at least two years of hands-on experience in greenhouse/ field operations and/or seedling production is preferred
  • Ability to plan, direct, and execute field, nursery, and greenhouse operations such as sowing, planting, pruning, harvesting, crossing, seed extractions and pesticide applications
  • Training (license preferred) in pesticide applications and related safety
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office software including but not limited to Excel, Outlook, Word and Access plus label printing
  • Valid and renewable U.S. driver license with good driving record with the ability to drive automobiles, pickup trucks, and box trucks.

  • Basic understanding of equipment maintenance

Preferred Education and Experience:
